The Gundam franchise runs to 46 entries — eleven TV series, 18 films and 17 OVAs and specials — spanning 1979 to 2026, 574 episodes in all. The order below is a recommended viewing order rather than broadcast order — the reasoning is set out directly beneath.

Why this order
Gundam is not one story, and the single most useful thing to know before starting is that you are not behind. It is a set of unconnected continuities that share a name, a war-and-machines premise, and almost nothing else. Release order interleaves them, which is why an air-date list is close to useless here.
The order below follows the Universal Century — the original timeline, and the only part of Gundam where watching order genuinely matters. Mobile Suit Gundam (1979), Zeta, ZZ and Char's Counterattack are one continuous arc about the same handful of people, and Zeta in particular assumes you know all of it. Unicorn, Narrative and Hathaway continue that same timeline decades later; F91 and Victory jump a further century forward and need almost nothing from what came before.
If a 1979 television series is a hard sell, two legitimate shortcuts exist. The three 1981–82 compilation films cover the original series in about six hours with cleaner animation, and lose little; they are listed as side entries below. Alternatively start with any of the standalone continuities — G Gundam, Wing, Turn A or SEED — none of which require a single minute of the Universal Century. Wing is the usual entry point for Western viewers and Endless Waltz is its proper conclusion; watch the film version rather than the three-part OVA, which is the same material cut differently.
Everything marked as a side entry is a self-contained OVA set somewhere inside a war you will already understand. 0080, 0083, 08th MS Team and Thunderbolt are among the best-made things in the franchise and can be watched at any point after the original series — several people would tell you 0080 is the best place to start full stop. They are optional only in the sense that no other entry depends on them.
