Why votes and not genres

Almost every "anime like X" list on the internet is built by comparing genre and theme labels, and the reason those lists feel wrong is that the labels do not encode taste. Ranking this catalogue by tag overlap put a children's magical-girl series top of the list for someone whose favourites were Cowboy Bebop and Death Note — all three are shelved under Action, so the arithmetic was correct and the answer was useless.

The numbers on these pages are counts of people instead. Each one is a tally of AniList members who finished a series and nominated a specific other series as the one to watch next, so the ranking reflects what viewers of a show actually recommend rather than what it has in common with something on paper. Suggestions the community voted down are left out entirely, and anything under five votes is treated as noise.

The limitation is worth stating plainly: a vote count says that people made a connection, not what the connection is. Where a suggestion has a watch order on this site the row links to it, so you can see what you would be committing to before you start.
